Government defeat shows need for national falls strategy

I've called for the Government to take forward a national falls strategy after the Government were defeated in the recent Patient Safety Debate.

I tabled an amendment which received cross party support, calling on the Scottish Government to end the NHS recruitment crisis and develop a national falls strategy.

At a recent meeting I chaired for the old person’s forum in the chamber of the Scottish Parliament, I was shocked to discover that fear of falls was their number one concern, even ahead of crime, loneliness and cost of living.

This vote sends a clear signal to the Government that the time has come to develop a national fall strategy and ensure that older people have the support and security they need.
