Ministers must relieve strain on maternity services

I've warned that maternity services are facing real pressure after a report by the Royal College of Midwives emphasised that the strain on the service is increasing.

The report described a combination of high birth-rates, an ageing workforce and an increase in births to older mothers as sources of growing pressure on Scotland’s maternity services.

We all want to give children the best possible start in life and that requires expectant mothers to have access to the best possible care.

Scotland’s midwives do an incredible job but with more than 4 in 10 midwives now over 50 years old, there is a real threat of a staffing shortage. Combined with a rise in complex birth issues maternity staff are facing enormous pressure to deliver care services.

They must now get to grips with the problem and ensure that Scotland’s midwives have the resources and support they need to do their job.
