Tough targets are no good unless health boards get the support they need to meet them.
The first publication of Scotland’s National Renal Cancer Quality Performance Indicators showed no NHS Board met all nine of their renal cancer care performance standards.
Cancer is a horrible disease that causes huge pain and suffering for patients and their families. We need to be ambitious in the targets we set for cancer care but unless boards are getting the support they need to meet these targets then they are no good at all.

We have seen much improvement in renal cancer care which is of course welcome and testament to the work that NHS staff are doing under difficult circumstances.
But the fact that no health board met all of their renal cancer targets suggests there is still more to do.
