Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP today said that the Scottish Government needs to give NHS staff a break after new figures reveal a “ridiculous” fivefold increase in the number of patients waiting over 12 hours for treatment in A&E.
Official figures released today show performance against the 4-hour waiting time target at 86.4% - the lowest level since the Beast from the East. The weekly figures also show 579 patients waited over 8 hours and 142 patients waited over 12 hours.
The Scottish Government’s target of 95% has not been met since July 2017.
Alex Cole-Hamilton said:
“It’s frankly ridiculous that so many patients are enduring such long waits for help.
“Hardworking NHS staff need a break. They have persevered through the busy holiday period without the resources or staff back up they need.
“The Scottish Government owe this to staff, ensuring there are solid workforce plans in place and getting social care and mental health services up to scratch to relieve some of the pressure on A&Es.”
