Commenting on the 9% pay rise for NHS Scotland staff over the next 3 years, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:
“NHS staff are under-valued and overworked. This pay rise is a welcome step to recognise the admirable work our health professionals do with very limited resources, but it will not make up for the pay stagnation and erosion that has happened over the last 10 years the SNP have been in power.
“But, if we’re going to attract more staff to the health service in the long-term the government will need to do more than increase pay by 3% a year. Doctors and nurses need to know they have the equipment, funding and sufficient staffing behind them to get the job done well.
“The Health Secretary needs to spend the summer tackling workforce problems, addressing the gaping vacancies in GP surgeries and investing in mental health services to ease the burden on primary care.”
