Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has criticised the Scottish Government for letting performance against the 4-hour A&E waiting time target slip once again.
New ISD statistics published today show only 90.8% of those attending A&E were seen within 4 hours. The Scottish Government’s target is 95%. This has not been achieved since July 2017.
213 patients waited over 8 hours and 31 patients waited over 12 hours.
Mr Cole-Hamilton said:
“It’s really disappointing for staff, patients and the public to see A&E waiting time performance slip because of poor planning and tight budgets.
“Sadly it’s the same old story week in week out. The health service is left to struggle on with limited resources and stretched staff. The SNP government has presided over the ailing health system for a decade now and it hasn’t managed to hit this particular target for close to a year.
“Once again this is a symptom of delayed discharge, which is holding up hospital beds which A&E patients should be transferred because of a national shortage of social care services in our communities.
“The new Health Secretary needs to act quickly to free up hospital beds, alleviate the burden on frontline care and give hardworking NHS staff the back-up they desperately need.”
