Responding to the news that the number of students at Scottish universities seeking counselling has almost doubled in the last five years, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:
“It couldn’t be clearer that the mental health of Scotland’s young people requires urgent attention. The new Mental Health Minister must act swiftly to get services up to scratch.
“The Scottish Government has delivered years of cuts to the bursaries and grants that many students rely upon, and therefore must take responsibility for the inevitable ripples of upset and anxiety that has caused.
“Students must be able to access the help they need quickly, in order to prevent de-railing their studies. The wellbeing of thousands of young Scots and their families is counting on a seismic and speedy shift in government policy.”
