"Staggering" pre-crisis CAMHS queue can't be allowed to get longer

Responding to new child and adolescent mental health waiting times statistics for the first three months of 2020 showing a record 1,253 children waiting more than a year for treatment, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:

"It is staggering to learn that so many children were waiting over a year for treatment at the outset of this crisis.

"In the intervening months young people have experienced the disruption of their education, removal of freedom and the loss of contact with loved ones. Some have spent stressful spells in isolation and have seen the virus personally touch their family.

"It is inevitable that more children and young people need help and support. But they deserve better than to join what these statistics show was already one of the longest queues in the entire health service.

"To avoid this queue getting longer and longer we need to immediately know more about the NHS recovery plan, and in the longer-term we need an unprecedented investment in mental health services and staff."
