I've called for action to cut waiting times for physiotherapy and other musculoskeletal services provided by allied health professionals.
Mr Cole-Hamilton was speaking as new figures show that just over half of patients referred for physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropody/podiatry or orthotics were seen within the four week waiting time target in the second quarter of 2016.
In Lanarkshire 67.9% of patients waited more than four weeks to be seen. In Greater Glasgow and Clyde nearly 10,000 people were waiting longer than the 4 week target with around half of those waiting longer than 16 weeks
The work that physiotherapists and other allied health professionals perform is vital to helping those struggling with any number of serious conditions. Having to wait months on end for treatment must seem like an eternity. These services can be a lifeline for patients and extended waiting times will have a substantial negative impact on their quality of life.
In Glasgow we are seeing thousands of people having to wait for several months for treatment despite the hard work of NHS staff. This is not acceptable and these waiting times need to come down.
