Local Lib Dem MSP, Alex Cole-Hamilton has defeated the SNP government in a shock victory in the Parliament’s consideration of the Planning Bill which will govern new housing developments going forward.
“I’m delighted to have got amendments through the Bill committee which will see developers have to explain to authorities why they cannot use available brownfield (previously built upon) land if they apply to build on the green belt. It will also give councils new powers to refuse a plan to build on green belt when there is brownfield land available. I pointed to the plans to build at Cammo, while Brownfield at Granton lies vacant, in my arguments.
“I’m also pleased to have secured a change to the Bill which will see councils publish an annual report on the promises made by developers around planning gain (building of play parks/ sports facilities etc). Developers abandon these promises every year, and this will go some way to shaming them to act.”
