Alex unveils new plan to tackle flooding

Local MSP and Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton has called for a new Climate Emergency Communities Fund to prepare and protect communities already being affected by extreme weather, including flooding.

The fund would double Edinburgh’s budget to address flooding. In January, the Lib Dems revealed that just 7 of the 42 flood protection schemes identified by SEPA for delivery between 2016 and 2021 had been finished.

Alex said:“Flooding events which we were told were ‘once in a thousand-year’ events now hit Edinburgh every year. Scotland is underpinned by antiquated sewers that were never designed to cope with the extreme weather we get today.

“Communities should be in charge of this cash. Funding to boost preparedness should be able to cover drain replacement and extra investment in nature-based solutions, from planting trees to installing living roofs that can soak up the rain.”
