Cole-Hamilton warns Edinburgh Zoo still faces great financial uncertainty

Edinburgh Western MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton visited Edinburgh Zoo last week to meet with the Zoos’ Director of Engagement Ben Supple, and CEO David Field. The purpose of the visit was to see first-hand how the zoo has adapted since reopening, and to discuss the long term impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the zoo.

"It was an absolute delight to visit Edinburgh Zoo and to see so many families enjoying all it has to offer now it's back open in a safe and socially distanced fashion.

"When I sat down with David and Ben it was clear how important Edinburgh Zoo is, not just for tourism, but for its contribution to education, wellbeing and mental health."

"The funding losses to organisations like Edinburgh Zoo from the last three months of closure will not be fixed overnight by reopening. I fully welcome the £1.6 million grants scheme that the First Minister has promised for zoos and aquariums, but with no details on how and when this scheme will be implemented, Edinburgh Zoo is facing times of great uncertainty."
