Cole-Hamilton criticises SNP for “congested” hospitals and lack of community care

Responding to new statistics which show that delayed discharges caused by health and social care problems affected 1,180 people at the November census, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:

“The health and social care system is failing both patients and staff. Every day there are more than 1,000 people stuck in hospital unnecessarily. Some are there for hundreds of days.

“Hospitals are getting congested all the way up to critical care because there isn’t enough capacity to take care of people in the community. Medical staff have declared these people ready to leave hospital but the community-based support they need to move on simply doesn’t exist.

“These are issues within this government’s control. The SNP promised to eradicate delayed discharges from the system by 2016, but it’s been nearly 3 years and there are no signs of improvement.

“It’s time to end the social care scandal. The SNP’s new workforce plan, published a whole year late, must now make demonstrable progress.”
