Responding to new figures showing a decrease in uptake of the HPV vaccine for girls in S1, S2 and S3, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson, Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:
“This decrease in uptake is very concerning. The vaccine protects against around 75% of cases of cervical cancer so it is essential that all secondary age girls have the opportunity and are supported to receive first and second doses.
“Prevention and early detection saves lives.
“Scottish Liberal Democrats also want to see cervical screening become a core pillar of the Detect Cancer Early programme and for educational and youth organisations to play a greater role in leading discussions on body confidence to encourage more women to respond to their screening invitation.”
