Cole-Hamilton: GP contract must signal start of new era

Responding to the announcement from BMA Scotland that they have provisionally reached an agreement with the Scottish Government on a new GP contract, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:

"Between failed recruitment schemes and a Conservative Brexit disaster that is pushing critical medical staff away from the UK, the pressure on the hardworking staff who remain is intolerable and unsustainable.

“On the SNP's watch, frontline health professionals are warning that their jobs are becoming more and more difficult. The failure to support them properly means flagship targets are being missed and thousands of children waiting too long for mental health treatment.

"That makes getting new GP contracts right even more important than usual. The process for ensuring that this contract is acceptable must be rigorous and representative of the GP community as a whole. It is also not clear what plans the Scottish Government have in place should this be rejected.

"This new contract, should GPs choose to accept it, must signal the start of a new era. It is time for a deal that delivers for doctors and patients across the country, including in rural areas which have been frequently neglected in workforce planning."
