Responding to the news that spending on GPs is unchanged in real terms and as a proportion of total NHS spending since 2012/13, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:
"The underfunding of GPs by the SNP has contributed to the current crisis. There is no sign here of the funding boost promised by the First Minister last year.
"Workloads are increasing, practices are closing and others are restricting access. It is projected we will be more than 850 GPs short by 2021 and it will be even worse if the Tories press ahead with a hard Brexit that will deprive our NHS of essential staff.
"Scottish Liberal Democrats will continue to urge the SNP Government to invest more in general practice. Putting a mental health practitioner in every surgery would also relieve some of the pressure on GPs and end the scandal of poor access to mental health treatments. Without this, there is a danger the GP crisis will get worse before it gets better."
