Edinburgh Western MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton has today praised Edinburgh Zoo following the success of their dedicated “Shielding Hours” that took place over the weekend. On both Saturday and Sunday, Edinburgh Zoo opened an hour earlier to allow families of which a member has been classed as clinically vulnerable to enjoy the Zoo, without the anxieties that come with re-entering public spaces.
Mr Cole-Hamilton Commented
“It’s fantastic to see how much consideration Edinburgh Zoo has given to the needs of everyone who may wish to visit. I was lucky enough to be able to visit Edinburgh Zoo last month and hear about the benefits it has, not just for education but for wellbeing too.
It was following these discussions that the idea of a shielding hour came about, because despite Edinburgh Zoo implementing strict social distancing measures at all time, those who are clinically vulnerable can still be extremely anxious about going back into a public setting.”
Commenting Further, Mr Cole-Hamilton Said:
“Like so many organisations in my constituency, Edinburgh Zoo has faced major challenges since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic. Despite facing significant funding worries, Ben Supple (Director of Engagement) and David Field (CEO) have continued to put the values which drive the Zoo at the forefront of its operations. By hosting two shielding hours over the course of the weekend, they have made sure that those who have been most severely affected by lockdown rules are not excluded from enjoying all the benefits that Edinburgh Zoo has to offer.”
