Little progress in tackling delayed discharges

We've seen another increase in the number of delayed discharges.

At any one time, around 1,000 patients are stuck in hospital because a care home place isn’t available, the support they need to return home isn’t there or their needs haven’t been assessed. That dreadful situation is made worse by the fact that Liberal Democrat freedom of information requests uncovered some patients waiting hundreds of days.

Despite ministers’ assurances, the number of avoidable delayed discharges has barely changed in the last year. There appears to be little sign of progress. That is why ministers need to set out detailed plans for reducing delayed discharges and to explain what progress they expect to make in tackling them.
