NHS workforce plan a victim of SNP independence obsession

Responding to the publication of the Integrated Health and Social Care Workforce Plan, over a year late, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP commented:

“With the integrated workforce plan being over a year late, overstretched staff were hoping for something radical. Now that hasn’t materialised, it confirms that the SNP simply took their eye off the ball because of their independence obsession.

“The plan promises to train extra nurses, but it fails to admit that Nicola Sturgeon caused the current crisis by cutting hundreds of nursing and midwifery posts, calling it the ‘sensible way forward’.

“Patients and their families have been left to suffer. Every day over 1,000 people are stuck in hospital unnecessarily, waits for A&E and mental health treatment have soared and every part of the NHS and social care is short of staff.

“It is time to end the waiting times scandal by seriously expanding the workforce and investing to transform mental health services, providing a new mental health practitioner in every GP practice and new 24 hour a day services in A&E.”
