Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has today called for an exit from Brexit and an end to the threat it poses to the care sector, as new statistics showed a 20% month-on-month increase in the number of patients stuck in hospital for health and social care reasons.
The delayed discharge census at the end of January showed 1,138 people were stuck in hospital due to health and social care reasons, compared to 943 at the end of December.
Mr Cole-Hamilton said:
“It’s atrocious that on any given day more than 1,100 people are stuck in hospital unnecessarily. The unavailability of community care packages is piling more pressure on beds in front line services.
“Timely discharge from hospital is an important indicator of the availability and quality of care within our health and social care services, but also critical to patient recovery.
“These figures show the pressure that hardworking NHS and social care staff are under. It’s essential that staff get the resources they need, as well as an exit from Brexit which threatens to drastically reduce staff numbers, making the situation even worse."
