Perinatal mental health services need extra investment

Commenting on the Scottish Government making £1m available to mental health charities supporting families during pregnancy and early years, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton said:

“Perinatal services across Scotland have been buckling because of underfunding for years. In 2018 Glasgow was the only health board in the whole of Scotland meeting perinatal mental health requirements.

“Having a new baby can be a stressful and challenging period at the best of times, let alone during this crisis with the new rules and precautions it has triggered.

“It may not be possible to stick to childbirth choices, lockdown makes seeking support that bit harder and wider celebrations are happening remotely. The Scottish Government needs to invest more in these services now to stave off a tidal wave of future problems.”
