Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has today chastised the government for missing its own stroke targets by a huge margin.
64% of stroke victims were reported to have been given appropriate care (as outlined in the Scottish Stroke Care Standards). The Scottish Government target for appropriate care is 80%.
Appropriate care encompasses: admission with one day, a brain scan within 24 hours, screening tests within 4 hours and aspirin being provided within a day.
Alex Cole-Hamilton said:
“Stroke care is absolutely crucial. It can make all the difference when it comes to the speed of a patient’s recovery and their subsequent quality of life.
“This is absolutely disgraceful. Strokes affect thousands of Scots, and not just the elderly. It’s the third biggest killer in this country and its not being dealt with properly.
“The substandard state of stroke care reveals the real damage that funding pressures are having on patient health. The new Health Secretary has a duty to act to improve it now.”
