I've called on the Scottish Government to ensure there are enough NHS beds to meet demand after new figures showed the number available has continued to fall.
ISD Scotland statistics covering the quarter ending September 2016 showed that, compared to the same quarter in 2015, the number of available staffed NHS beds fell by 1.8%. This occurred at the same time as there was an 0.8% increase in the number of acute inpatient and day case episodes of care.
These new figures show that over 1,000 beds have been lost from Scotland’s hospitals over the past two years.
Health campaigners and professionals have long complained about the severe capacity and staffing issues facing our NHS.
Now patients are bearing the brunt of SNP mismanagement and we can see the results: fewer beds available, delayed discharges on the rise and key targets missed.
Scottish Government ministers must ensure healthcare professionals are properly equipped to meet demand.
