Scottish Liberal Democrats have today called for the SNP to end their "planning power grab" as the party votes against the Planning Bill in the Scottish Parliament, raising concerns about its centralising nature.
Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:
"When the Housing Minister was asked if there were any parts of this Bill that did not see power flow to his desk, he was speechless.
"This Bill assumes that civil servants and ministers know more about the needs and aspirations of local communities than democratically elected local councillors.
"Scottish Liberal Democrats will continue to fight for a planning system that recognises the importance of local autonomy and accountability, ensuring that communities have a real voice in the decisions that affect them. This Bill is just another pathetic power grab.
"The Scottish Parliament only passes major planning legislation once a decade. This Bill is not worthy of that accolade."
