Commenting on today’s A&E figures which show that more than 300 patients had to wait over 8 hours during the week ending 7 April, and performance against the 4 hour target of just 88.5%, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:
“Despite the best efforts of our hardworking healthcare staff, patients are still too often waiting for hours for treatment.
“Staff are battling to keep on top of their heavy workloads and that’s linked to SNP's failures elsewhere. Social care, mental health and primary care services are all crying out for more support.
“The flagship A&E performance standard has now been breached for 21 months. What’s worse, there is still no news from the Health Secretary on how and when she expects this target to be met again.
“The Health Secretary should ease the strain on A&E departments by boosting mental health, social care and GP services.”
