Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has today said that disappointing new health statistics bolster the case for a change at the top of the health department.
New figures released today by ISD Scotland reveal that:
- The number of operations cancelled by hospitals for capacity or non-clinical reasons was 69% higher in March compared to February 2018, averaging 39 operations a day;
- The 4 hour A&E target has not been met since July 2017;
- 1,080 people were the subject of delayed discharge at the March 2018 census because of health and social care reasons - an increase of 7% compared to both the previous month and the same time last year.
Speaking ahead of an opposition debate on health tomorrow, Mr Cole-Hamilton commented:
“From cancelled operations to bed blocking, the list of symptoms of an NHS in crisis have been all too obvious for some time.
“Hardworking NHS staff are being pushed to breaking point but the Health Secretary has proven unable to deliver any respite.
“It’s time for Shona Robison to step down and let a new Health Secretary take the lead in delivering the support and resources that NHS staff are calling out for.”
